Athletics Department

Wayne Clark

The overriding principle for the Athletic Department is found in 1 Timothy 4:8 (ESV): "for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come."

The Mission of Foothills Christian High School's Athletic Department is to promote the growth of our student-Christian-athletes in three main areas. Those areas are Christian character, sport specific physical skills, and sport specific competition strategies.

Calvin not a fan of Campbell's legs, Knights Bring Home League Title

As the clock ticked away, you could hear the chatter start amongst the spectators, "what are we doing?" "Get the play off!" "Why aren't we rushing to the line?" It could not possibly be that Head Coach Steve Perdue had elected to leave this game on the legs of Foothills' Junior kicker. After all, Foothills had an extra point attempt blocked just this 4th Quarter, putting them in the debacle of a 1 point deficit with just seconds remaining.

With just 4:21 to play, Campbell's interception in the end zone seemed to seal the deal. Just minutes later Campbell made up for his mistake by jarring the ball loose on what would have been a 1st down for Calvin. Gage Provencher jumped on the loose ball and the Knights were once again in business. After an amazing 19 yard run with several broken tackles, a great catch by Provencher to put the Knights in scoring position..... a field goal?

And that, they say, is why coaches coach. Many forget that Garret Campbell is quite an accomplished Soccer star. It was easy to fault Coach Perdue for leaving the hopes of the school's first League Title in Football on the legs of a kicker, but that is exactly what he did. Coach Perdue did what every player truly dreams of. He let the game be decided by his players. As Campbell's 27 yard field goal ended Calvin's bid for a perfect season, as it brought home a trophy in a sport that no one could have imagined a year ago, players celebrated, parents cheered and coaches felt relief.

Many will forget the confidence that Coach Perdue saw in his star player, but the players and families in attendance will forever have the memory of Foothills' first Football title coming home on the legs of a Quarterback. The best decisions are rarely the easiest.

Congratulations to the 2008 Foothills Christian High School Varsity Football Team. Undefeated Southern League Champions.

Santos Holds Things Together, Helps Knights Ground Redhawks

In a 5 game match Thursday night, the Lady Knights were looking for someone to step it up on the court. After dropping the first League match of the season to Lutheran just days earlier, Foothills needed to taste victory again.

In the closing moments of Game 5, Freshman Setter Lara Plum managed to serve for 4 straight points, taking the Knights to within one point of victory. Reagan Falduti put down 3 Redhawks over passes in the final game to help seal a victory. Brianah Bolin added a few key blocks to the Foothills assault down the stretch.

With a bundle of passing errors and service mistakes through the match though, it was the steady play of Karly Santos that kept Foothills alive for their first League victory of the season. Plum looked for Santos often in the closing game of the match from the Outside Hitter position and continued to feed her from the back row as well. Santos shows a quiet leadership that this young Foothills team will need throughout the season. The ladies will need consistency on the court, consistency that Sophomore Karly Santos is capable of offering. Though she was one of the shortest players on the court, Santos led all hitters with 13 kills in the match on Thursday night. Foothills defeated Mountain Empire 25-10, 23-25, 25-20, 17-25, 15-11. The Lady Knights stand at 3-3 overall on the season and 1-1 in League Play. Foothills will face the Patriots of Midway Baptist next Tuesday (October 7th) at 6:00pm @ Los Coches Creek Middle School.

A Call to Character

With the Fall Seasons upon us, and the Winter Sports just around the corner, we'd like to take a moment to address the Foothills faithful. Without question, sports raise a myriad of emotions in players, coaches and of course in those that view it all from the sidelines. Sports create a unique challenge for the Christian fan in that we must learn to control a potential barrage of emotions that can erupt suddenly, especially when "our team" or our child has received what we deem to be "injustice".

Umpires, Officials and Referees have certainly made their share of mistakes on the athletic field. Often the calls are minute and go unnoticed, in rare occasions they can be detrimental to the outcome of a game. However coaches will be quick to note that we can make mistakes that are every bit as costly and every bit as damaging. The real issue is how we, as a sports program and as Christians conduct ourselves in every aspect of life. As much as we would like it to, the Bible never excuses our behavior because of the mistakes (or perceived mistakes) of others. Nothing in scripture points to an excuse for lashing out at officials, opposing players, coaches etc. As followers of Christ it is of the utmost importance that we conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the name that we take on "Christian".

One of the Lord's most clear commandments to His followers (Exodus 20:7) prohibits those who would call themselves followers of Him from taking His name in vain. While most associate this scripture with the idea that we should not use God in the same sentence as profanity, it runs much deeper. As followers of Christ, each action, each word and each reaction is a representation to the world of who God is. To be associated with un-sportsmanlike behavior is quite simply to say, "God is ok with this", which is certainly not a Biblical principle. It could be argued that un-sportsmanship like behavior is in essence taking the Lord's name in vain.

The CIF has seen as recent rise in suspensions in Varsity Football and Boys Water Polo this season. The fans of the FCHS Football community, their coaches and players should be commended for thus far, representing the Lord in an excellent manner. We would like to encourage all members of the FCHS family (Coaches, Players, Students, Parents and Associated Fans) to help us strive throughout the 2008-2009 school year to represent Christ in all of our athletic activities. As the FCHS Sports program grows, it will come under a great deal more scrutiny. Please help us in meeting every obstacle that the future may bring by doing our part. Coach Wayne Clark often uses the term "Christian Student Athlete" to describe our athletes, emphasizing that those words are in a particular order for a very specific reason. We must be representatives of Christ and His kingdom first. Have a wonderful year and remember to get out and support all of the Knights Christian Student Athletes this year.

Bump in the Road

For the Lady Knights, it wasn't supposed to begin this way. An 0-1 start in League is hardly what the girls had worked through the pre-season for, but for now that is where they stand. Freshman Lara Plum stated that "we gave up a lot of aces". Foothills has had problems giving up aces to Lutheran in the past, and it is no doubt they will rebound in the future. A loss in the first League Match of the season for Foothills may serve as a wake up call to a young but talented team. The departure of Outside Hitter Lauren West from a year ago has left the Lady Knights without much size at the hitting position, but what the Knights lack in size they make up for in talent. The first match is simply a bump in the road and it can be fully expected that these girls will be ready to step up their game when they face Mountain Empire Thursday night (6:00pm @ Los Coches Creek Middle School).

Calm Before the Storm

The Lady Knights Volleyball team fell in their final match before League play on Thursday evening. After a week without practice, the Lady Knights still put on a good performance against Monte Vista. Foothills lost both games 1 and 4, 18 to 25 while defeating the Monarchs 26-24 in a tough fought game 2. Game 3 was a bit of a slip for the Lady Knights who have been competitive against Higher Division Competition all season, but a mere smudge on the season goals for Foothills. Santos led all hitters with 9 kills in the match, teammate Lara Plum dished 17 assist to help the Knights' cause. Foothills will now get ready for League play and the defense of their undefeated Citrus Crown from 2007. Coach Santos has this group in great form after a pre-season schedule that did not include a Division V opponent.

Jarosin Leads Post Retreat Charge for Foothills

Each year the Fall athletes of Foothills Christian High School face an interesting challenge. In September, Foothills Christian High School spends one week in Pine Valley devoting their time to growth as a student body and as the Body of Christ. The retreat is a time of refreshing and coming together for the students and staff of FCHS. The retreat does however, pose interesting obstacles for coaches and athletes with little to no practice time during the Mountain Getaway.

Ashley Jarosin has sparked this year's Cross Country Team all season long. Now down from the Mountain, Jarosin is leading the way for a refreshed athletic program with yet another victory in League competition. Jarosin finished 1st place in her meet (Friday September 26th), giving her victories in both league races this season, along with a victory at the Bronco Invitational earlier in the season. Jarosin paced the Knights who had three ladies in the top 20 of Friday's Citrus League Race (Kelsie Chiodo 3rd - Amanda Edwards 12th - Brittany Corley 20th). Fothills' boys finished with three top 20 finishers on Friday as well (Joseph Bridgeforth 14th - Nick Villarino 16th - Andrew Vallez 20th).

The performances of Sophomore Ashley Jarosin and her teammate Allie Rollins, have Foothills ranked among the top squads in Division V. Foothills is currently ranked #2 in the San Diego Section. Foothills does face some tough competition in League from Guajome Park Academy of Vista and Mountain Empire. The two Division IV schools will be absent from Foothills' competition come CIF time though as they are a Division above the Knights.

Foothills will head to Orange County tomorrow for a meet at Dana High School minus Jarosin who will have a deserving rest after her 2 1/2 Mile victory on Friday. Keep your eyes peeled for the Sophomore sensation to make big noise when CIF competition rolls around. Jarosin has provided an important cornerstone for a young program. The multi-sport star was a 1st team all-leaguer in Soccer last season as a Freshman, helping the Lady Knights to a League Crown.

Ole'! Lady Knights Swipe Victory from Matadors

For the second time in 3 matches, the Lady Knights Volleyball squad defeated their foes in 5 games. Foothills fell to Mount Miguel 22-25 in game one of their match on Wednesday September 17th. The Knights would bounce back to down Mt. Miguel 25-22 in game two before losing again 16-25. With a 2-1 deficit Coach Santos' girls rallied for an impressive come from behind victory taking game four 25-18 and the rubber match 15-11.

The win puts Foothills at 2-1 on the season with both wins coming against Division II and III competition. The only loss for Foothills this season came at the hands of an always-powerful Santana Sultans squad. The Santana match was no doubt a purposeful test for the Lady Knights that Coach Santos knew would help the team grow and strive for bigger and better things. The girls have a break from Game action while they are at Foothills Christian High School's annual Pine Valley Retreat next week. After the short layoff it is back to action with a match at Monte Vista on Thursday September 25th. League play starts on Tuesday September 30th @ Lutheran High. The Ladies of Foothills will be primed and ready to continue their string of consecutive League victories.

LCJD headed to East County

In their previous two meetings during the 2007 & 2006 seasons, The Torreys of La Jolla Country Day have dominated Foothills' relatively new football program. Things have not been pretty for the Knights either, allowing 98 points while failing to put a point on the scoreboard.

Fast forward to 2008 and 1st year Head Coach Steve Perdue has the Knights focused on a La Jolla Country Day team that the Knights will finally see on their home turf. Last weekend, the Knights nearly let a win slip into the hands of Mountain View Christian from Las Vegas Nevada. After two quick scores for Foothills in the 1st Quarter, it is possible that the Knights were caught looking ahead to their meeting with La Jolla Country Day. Thankfully for Foothills, a few key plays on defense from Garret Campbell, a perfectly executed defensive scheme in the 2nd half by Coach Lubic and a crowd on their side all aided in closing out the visiting Saints.

Such hiccups can ill be afforded Tonight when Foothills faces a superior opponent. The Knights are looking to earn some respect in football circles, both for their team and its talented leader. Junior Quarterback Garret Campbell finally received some recognition this week in the media realm. Bill Dickens wrote an excellent story on the Junior Sensation who has racked up 545 yards of total offense. There is a link to the article on MaxPreps.com at the bottom of this story. Tonight could very well spell a new beginning for the Knights football program. The buzz around campus this week from players has been an attitude that says "This is something we can do".

The game tonight is more for the players on the Foothills roster than anyone else. They will need the support of classmates, coaches and fans alike, but this game will embody the spirit of what these young men can do as a team. A win is not the only positive goal the Knights can reach tonight. Beginning with the first points on the Home side of the Scoreboard, the Knights will know that after years of hard work, they are absolutely moving in the right direction. It's all uphill from here.

Lady Knights Continue Winning Ways on the Court

After dominating the Citrus League en route to an un-defeated League Championship a year ago, the Lady Knights Volleyball team has things rolling once again. Wednesday night Foothills faced Division II El Cajon Valley. After dropping the first game 23-25, The Knights would rebound with consecutive 25-17 and 25-22 victories. A stumble in game 4 (12-25) left the Knights and the Braves in a rubber match.

The girls in Black and Purple did not disappoint in a fifth and deciding game. Foothills dominated game 5, winning 15-2 to close out a victory over El Cajon on the Braves campus. Freshman Setter Lara Plum dished out 15 assist while Karly Santos provided the defense with 12 digs. Senior B. Bolin put down 10 kills and 5 blocks providing a great deal of the Knights' offense. Sophomore Erica Clayton kept the Lady Braves confused throughout the match with 8 aces. The Lady Knights will take on Santana High School on Monday September 15th, Mount Miguel on Wednesday September 17th and Monte Vista on September 25th before opening League play against Lutheran High on September 30th.

Campbell Tames White Tigers

If anything can be said about Junior Quarterback Garret Campbell, it is that he is well rounded. As a soccer star last season, Campbell managed to almost lead the Knights' scoring attack in fewer than two total games. Before injuries sidelined Campbell during the 07' football season, Campbell had accounted for 97% of his team's offense.

In game one of the 2008 campaign, Campbell managed to spread the wealth. Make no mistake, Campbell still racked up 414 total yards in week one, however he also managed to find receivers in the end zone on two occasions. The passing game was not a strength for the Knights last season, and if week 1 is anything to look forward to, be assured that the Knights are looking to attack from all angles.

Mattison Rundlett started the scoring early for Foothills with a 37 yard run. Gage Provencher’s 2 yard TD pass from Campbell in the 1st Quarter gave the Knights a 14-0 lead before Escondido Charter would finally get on the board. In the second quarter, Rundlett would break free again on a 25-yard pass from Campbell. Zac Ivy added a 10-yard run in the 4th Quarter to spread the offense around. Campbell flashed his normal burst of speed with a 92 yard kickoff return in the 3rd Quarter before setting a school record with a 39 yard field goal in the last moments of the Quarter.

The offense provided by Rundlett, Provencher, Ivy and the work of the offensive line made for an interesting bit of thought going into the remainder of the Knights’ season. While it is quite possible that Junior Garret Campbell can do it all……. this season he may not have to, and that is a luxury the Knights will love to entertain.
